Default Girls do better at same-sex schools

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti....html#comments

Teenage girls do better in single sex schools as they can focus on their work rather than impressing boys, a leading headmistress says.
Rhiannon Wilkinson, head of Wycombe Abbey in Buckinghamshire reportedly said that a 'boy free' environment stops girls from being held back by the opposite sex, who are known to mature slower.
She also suggested that single-sex boarding schools give pupils relief and protection from the 'highly sexualised world' and allow them to 'remain girls for longer.'
'My wide educational experience in both mixed and girls' schools has shown me clearly that girls are best served educationally in their teenage years in a boy-free work environment,' she said according to the Telegraph.

She added: 'In co-ed environments lots of girls when adolescence kicks want to be liked by boys not just for their intelligence and want to be popular with boys.
But she said in all girl environments pupils are 'free from that,' according to the Telegraph.
Two years ago Scientists at Newcastle University found that girls really do mature faster than boys.
They discovered that as the brain matures it begins to 'prune' information that is stored and focus on what is important.

Reading some of the comments posted this seems like the most logical reply I can see the benefits of all same sex schools

I completely agree with this. I went to an all girls school until I was nearly 14 when we moved house so I moved to a mixed school. Overnight I went from being a studious A star pupil who was in the orchestra to a teenager who was more interested in fitting in and impressing peers and boys. Playing the flute and speaking french at an advanced level to everyone else was not "cool". If I knew then what I knew now!

Depends on the person though. If it's a generalisation that "girls mature faster than boys" I agree but obviously not in all cases. It's the same with education - regardless if they are at a girls-only school some are bound to do better than others. Some are probably no better off at a same-sex school. Therefore to say outright that "girls do better at same-sex schools" is ludicrous.

girls are also more likely to feel like they can pick more 'boy' subjects like science/p.e at a same sex school, same with boys in subjects like eng lit/foreign languages

i think it's true in general that you'll do better at a same sex, less distractions etc but there's so many downsides too that i don't personally believe that they're good n would never send my kids to one

Near enough everyone I know who went to an all-girl school said there was far more ********** and trying to outdo each other there than at any mixed school - I don't know if they're more grade driven but they definitely don't appear to be a pleasant environment, as opposed to all-boy schools which in my experience and the shared feelings of most others who attended are places where you don't particularly have to act up because there's simply no need to prove any ultra-hetero machismo.

Grades are more influenced by the fact that schools are made to employ teaching methods which are proven to be hugely detrimental for boys because of those wonderful folk the feminists, who forced the change because boys were outperforming girls previously and that's obviously sexism. Never mind that both boys and girls have shown markedly decreased results under the changed system, it's fair now because girls are doing better of the two groups.

Not sure why you limited it to the girl part when it goes on to say it applies to basically all children. Though, I guess the DM did this as well to get some clicks. Reading the whole article, it seems to suggest boys are the ones being held back...

If we're focusing on issues with girls impressing boys... I think girls now a days (which any women on here can tell me different) are more opt to try to impress other girls to join cliques, etc.

Am I being wrong in assuming that single sex schools is sort of like having the scenes from Mean girls... like everyday..
