Libyan monarchy restoration being considered by Washington

    Prince Mohammed Al-Senussi

The New York Times has reported the possibility of restoration of the monarchy in Libya to bring the country out of the current chaos. Diplomats in Washington and Libya are said to be raising the prospect of restoring the House of Al-Senussi back to the Libyan throne as a focal point of national unity.

In 2011 upon the overthrow of Colonel Gaddafi, the possibility was raised of restoring the Libyan monarchy that was overthrown by Gaddafi in 1969 in order to hold the country together. This project was supported by the former eastern province of Cyrenaica, but violently rejected by Tripolitania and Fezzan.

Installed in power in Benghazi by the British Army, King Idriss was the emir of the Senussi order.
It is known that British diplomats also raised the possibility of monarchy restoration in Iraq back in 2003 to secure stability but America rejected such proposals perhaps due to a fundamental difference between both powers stretching back to the American revolution on republicanism vs monarchy.

If the rumours are worth anything this time, restoration will likely result in my view to an independent Kingdom of Cyrenaica as Libya quite frankly is doomed to fracture. The central government currently has little to no control over the country and doesn't appear to have a hope in hell of it.

Note: I heavily edited the article as some of the claims rang untrue/rather biased towards Tehran if you catch my drift. Other more respectable outlets such as the NYT have reported this story more in-depth but the articles are quite long and I don't want to post a history lesson in the Al-Senussi/Italian Libya story.

    Thoughts?
