Nigel Farage has become the first British politician to meet Donald Trump following his election victory, amid continuing demonstrations against the shock result.

Mr Farage told assembled journalists he was only a “tourist” as he entered Trump Tower in New York on Saturday, refusing to confirm whether he is taking a role in the transition from Barack Obama’s leadership.

The interim Ukip leader was originally scheduled to meet Mr Trump's inner circle rather than the President-elect himself, but party sources later said the pair met and discussed "freedom and winning".

Mr Farage's appearance came as thousands of people gathered outside the landmark for a fourth day of protests against Donald Trump’s victory, which were also taking place in cities including Los Angeles and Chicago.

The interim Ukip leader supported Mr Trump during his divisive campaign, making an appearance in front of thousands of supporters at a campaign rally, and has repeatedly praised the Republican.

Earlier, Mr Farage insisted the President-elect would have to meet Theresa May, who he snubbed by calling other world leaders ahead of her on Wednesday.

Asked by Fox News why Mr Trump should meet the Prime Minister after her team was “rude”, the MEP called for fences to be mended.

“Trump is an Anglophile, he understands and recognises what our two great nations have done together between us,” he added.

"And, thank goodness, we are coming towards the end of an American president who loathed Britain.

"One of the things we can do, we can have between us a sensible trade relationship, cut tariffs, we are massive investors in each other's countries. There's a bright future."

Mr Trump has returned his complements and expressed his support for Britain's vote to leave the European Union, calling his election victory "Brexit plus plus plus" ahead of the vote.

Theresa May is facing a growing Cabinet backlash over her decision to dismiss Nigel Farage despite him being the only British politician to meet with Donald Trump since his victory.

The Daily Telegraph understands a number of members of the Cabinet and other Government ministers believe the Prime Minister's allies have made a mistake by referring to Mr Farage as an “irrelevance”.

One Cabinet source also accused Downing Street of having "made no plan" for a Trump victory, despite Government claims that officials have for months been holding talks with members of his inner-circle.

Mrs May has made clear that none of her ministers will be allowed to speak to Mr Farage, the interim Ukip leader, despite his close links to Mr Trump.

Mr Farage on Saturday spent nearly one hour with the President-elect at the Trump tower in New York.

Mr Farage also discloses that Mr Trump’s team has raised concerns about the “unrelentingly negative” comments made about him by senior Conservatives and members of Mrs May’s Downing Street staff.

He also refused to deny that Government ministers have already been in touch with him to talk about Mr Trump.

Senior sources in the Government have now made clear that Downing Street will have to back down and allow ministers to have conversations with Mr Farage if it helps them to develop their relationship with the new President-elect’s inner circle.

The Tory establishment really needs to lick its wounds and realise the potential usefulness of Farage in the new order of things.

The links are more than a rally and an hour long meeting. Trump was reported to have been impressed with Farage's recommendation to him earlier in the year that he and his campaign team use the same data company they used for GOTV in the successful referendum campaign. It's also Farage's inner circle who are closely connected with the Trump inner circle. One of them, Steve Bannon, was just appointed Chief Strategist and Senior Counselor to the President.

Many members of the British government including FCO Secretary Johnson insulted Trump throughout the campaign, and apparently he doesn't take well to disloyalty. Which is why it is so funny now to see them all doing a double turn, especially the Sturgeon woman. It's quite remarkable really that Farage has played a better strategy for UK diplomacy than any of them.

Exclusive: Donald Trump's new chief strategist Steve Bannon 'will call Nigel Farage before Theresa May'

Donald Trump will consult Nigel Farage about any policy proposals which will affect the UK before he contacts Theresa May, according to the Ukip leader's aides.

Steve Bannon, Mr Trump's chief strategist, will "run ideas" past the Ukip leader before discussing them with the British Prime Minister, Arron Banks - a millionaire donor to Ukip - said.

Mr Banks and Mr Farage met with Mr Bannon and Mr Trump for talks in New York on Saturday.

The news came as ministers vowed to defy Mrs May by holding talks with Mr Farage about his meetings with the president-elect in New York at the weekend.

Mr Banks said: “These people have no idea how close their relationship is – it really is close.”

Critics in Number 10 were “stumped because whatever they say or do you can’t undo a relationship with Steve Bannon that goes back years”, he said.

The news came as a ministerial source said the Government should listen to what Mr Farage had learned from his meetings with Mr Trump and his team of advisers.
