Northern Ireland's devolved executive heading for dissolution

Northern Ireland's power-sharing agreement is on the brink of collapse after Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness quit as Deputy First Minister.

The Sinn Fein veteran resigned in protest at the Democratic Unionist Party's handling of a botched renewable energy scheme, which could cost taxpayers £490m. His resignation will take effect from 5pm this afternoon.

He made the decision after Arlene Foster, the DUP First Minister, rejected calls to step down and allow a probe into the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.

She should resign and he should be in prison.

Interesting if Brexit will have any effect on the now seemingly inevitable election in Ulster.

Why should she be in prison?
Oh I didn't see the "he" bit, that perhaps explains my confusion. Thought something dodgy was going on behind the scenes I was unaware of.

Tbf if she has bungled all that taxpayers money she should be in prison.

He isn't even worthy of prison, deserves the noose.

Ulster is to head to the polls.

And so there we have it. Shortly after midday in Stormont, Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill declined to nominate a replacement for Martin McGuinness, causing the collapse of the power-sharing executive after five months shy of a decade. At 5pm, authority to hold elections passes, under the Northern Ireland Act 1998, to Secretary of State for Northern Ireland James Brokenshire MP. By custom (though not law) these are held after six weeks. Sometimes the election you get isn’t the one you want.
