Tories make plans to abolish the 2019 European Elections

The fate of Britain’s 73 MEPs is still undecided – they have the right to sit in the European Parliament while we remain members, EU chief negotiator Barnier says he wants us out by 2019, he is more optimistic than Guido that we will have fully Brexited by then.

Caulfield says get on with it:

“Given we are due to be leaving the EU in 2019 it seems obvious that we need to repeal this act so that the elections are not held as we will no longer have the need for MEPs in this country. This is not only a necessary part of our withdrawal from the EU but it will save the UK Government hundreds of thousands of pounds for the cost of running an unnecessary election.”

It seems like the 2014 European Elections will have been the last the United Kingdom ever takes part in, elections which in 2014 Ukip made history and came first in if you'll recall - forcing Cameron to hold a referendum. A pretty fitting tribute.

If you look at the results over the years, interesting to see how Ukip used these elections to enter the very thing they were against and fight it within: gaining the funding and publicity from it all. When they first ran, they initially considered a policy of abstaining like Sinn Fein. At the same time though, when British MEPs cease to exist so will Ukip's main source of funding and it'll die a rather ironic death.

Apparently the EU is looking at what to do with the 73 MEP seats that Britain holds: there's ideas to either divide between existing countries or to create a 'pan-European' list of seats where all EU countries will vote for candidates that stand on a European platform rather than national ones. Not that it matters, a waste of space the entire charade.

But yeah if you voted in the 2014 Euros that was the last time you'll do so.

    Thoughts?

If the negotiation period were to be extended - personally I doubt it will - we'd fall under the June Euro elections... and as by law Whitehall would have to carry them out. May as well repeal the legislation now to avoid that potentially stupid situation.

Would it not be undemocratic to not allow a vote if we are still in?

Nah. It is a pointless parliament, was only ever useful in providing Nigel Farage a platform and funding Ukip.
