Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has nominated Mary Simon as Governor-General, the first indigenous person to hold the post.

The former diplomat and advocate for Inuit rights will represent Canada's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II.

The announcement comes nearly six months after the former governor general, Julie Payette, resigned amid accusations of bullying.

While the role is largely ceremonial, the governor general presides over important state duties.

For those unaware, the Governor-General basically carries out the physical duties of the monarch in Canada when she is not there.

It's sort of like a Regency in a way. The role is strictly non-political, like the monarch.

Let's hope she does a better job than Trudeau's previous nomination who left office in disgrace.

Does this affect any of you or do you all keep your eyes on Canada and such?

Politically no, as the Canadian constitution has been separate from British government since the Canada Act (1982) which ended the power of the British government to legislate for Canada. When the Queen makes decisions for Canada, she makes them in her capacity as Queen of Canada - not as Queen of the United Kingdom. We share a Head of State and have very similar systems of government, but our governments are entirely separate and distinct.

Culturally though in a broader sense, the British media do cover Canadian/Australian/New Zealand affairs. We're aware - usually - who their Prime Minister is etc.
