I think they were quite common quite a while ago when alot of people wore them. There still a fashion item now which go nice with jeans

They are basketball shoes. But, now, they're usually regarded as the "Punk-Emo scene shoes" It's sorta now just posers who wear them. Like.. the kings on punk wore them, the new punk bands wear them, and then it starts some fashion statement. I wear them because I think they are random, and funky and I like them. I did, however, see the ramones wearing them in one of their posters I have and thought they looked cool... so, it's not really a crime.
