SEO must be something to do with Search Engine Options?

I think they're their to keep the sites they came from updated with different resutls when you search key phrases on say Google or yahoo.

They're search engines basically. They're almost constantly on forums (assuming that you've ticked Enable Spiders) searching for results. Basically, if you search something on Google, the Google Spider will search millions of pages, including the forum but it needs an account to do so, thus the search spider. So basically its a searcher for search engines to turn up results.
