Thumbs up Maxïmo Park - 'A Certain Trigger' Review

    Hallo.
Today me will review Maxïmo Park's album 'A Certain Trigger' (Even though it was released last year who gives a damn)

    Lovely.
    And here is the tracklist.

    Marvellous.

So let's start with 'Signal And Sign'!
Hmm... This is a REALLY nice way to start of the album. The fade in leads into Paul Smith's always energetic vocals, and ends well too. This should be a single. 8/10

    'Apply Some Pressure'
Everyone likes this, and the lyrics include the oddly Habbo-related line (even though it wasn't intentional) "What happens when you lose everything? You just start again; you start all over again!" It's a really cheerful and exciting song, although I don't know if it was ment to be. 9/10

    'Graffiti'
Ahh, 'Graffiti'. The 1st single, released in May 2005, showed what the North East also has to offer besides The Futureheads, who are also a REALLY good band. Includes the line "I'll do graffiti if you sing to me in French." Put a KYO CD on then. 8/10

    'Postcard Of A Painting'
This has some resembalance to a blur song of The Great Escape era, but I can't understand how. Still a great song though. 8.5/10

    'Going Missing'
Another single release, the chorus has got power that reminds me of 'Star 69' by R.E.M. Hey, it might not remind you of it, but it does to me. 8/10

    'I Want You To Stay'
Referred in the album lyrics as 'Lukas's". The latest single, released in February 2006, is a very emotional song that is about a break up of a relationship, and the video is about this man who finds his evil twin being beat in by all these other people. It's weird, but the song is freakin' great. 9/10

    'Limassol'
Cyprus gets a mentioning here with the song 'Limassol', which has a start like the theme 'tune' of FIFA 94. This has lyrics you can sing along to, like "Run back to your new man - LIMASSOL!" 8.5/10

    'The Coast Is Always Changing'
Referred in the album lyrics as 'Changing', this is one of the best songs on the album. Hey, Sam aka RedStratocas has got a lyric from it, which is "Age makes no difference 'till you open your mouth", so it must be some good stuff. Reminds me of 'Bandwagon' by R.E.M. The chorus is freaking energetic, and the drums after the line "We look out to sea" are pretty great. 10/10

'The Night I Lost My Head'
The shortest track, 1:52, despite its length, is still a great song. The Rakes did a thing like this with '22 Grand Job', and it's paid off for them, and this is like it, but this ain't a single release. Whatever. 9/10

    'Once, A Glimpse'
I haven't been playing this many-a-time on my iPod, and I should play it more. The reason is that I want to listen to other songs :p . Fast chorus and slower verses have been done well. "ONCE A GLIMPSE WAS ALL I NEEDED!" 8.5/10

'Now I'm All Over The Shop'
This is another great song that you SHOULD get legally, and downloading it is naughty. Brilliant is my description of N.I.A.T.O.S., and what else can I say? 9/10

    'Acrobat'
A song in the style of 'Essex Dogs' by blur. If we crossed this song and the video for blur's 'Out of Time', it would be excellent. This song is really emotional, and is the longest, at 4:42 minutes. But it deserves this length, and why shouldn't it? 10/10

    'Kiss You Better'
Finally, track 13 is called 'Kiss You Better'. A song you can chill out to, slow and rhythmic, but not slow like Acrobat; it's still a song, not spoken.
    8/10.

    Buy 'A Certain Trigger' here!

Also released was a B-Side collection called 'Missing Songs', and unfortunately I don't have it yet. Crap. Includes Hammer Horror, A19 (a road which goes from Middlesbrough to Newcastle or something) and Isolation. Buy that here!

Next time I may review The Rakes: Capture/Re-Release (Or, Capture/Release with an extra track)

    Thanks for reading!

great review, the coast is always changing is blatantly the best song off the album. it was my least favourite when i first got the album *hides* but now is in my top 20 songs of all time. a certain trigger was my top album last year and has crept into my top 10 albums ever. such an amazing album, genius and maxïmo park deserved all of the critical success they got last year.

if i were to put the songs in order it would be..

    the coast is always changing.
    graffiti.
    postcard of a painting.
    apply some pressure.
    going missing.
now i'm all over the shop.
    i want you to stay.
    limassol.
the night i lost my head.
    once, a glimpse.
    acrobat.
    signal and sign.
    kiss you better.
