Whether it's full-on Friday or a steaming Saturday, binge drinking is big news. Everyone is pilling from the bars to the high street, the bevvies are flowing and suddenly that lad you've been too shy to talk to is within lips' reach.
Alcohol relaxes you. It can make you feel buzzy and confident about yourself. The trouble is, it also skews your judgement - it's a major reason why people pick fights etc.
In fact, 40% of victims of violent crimes in the UK say that their attacker was drunk - and every year 3,300 11-to-15-year-olds end up in hospital following booze-related incidents.
You And The Law
- Under 14 - you can only go into pubs/bars that have 'children certificates'.
- 14 or 15 - you can go into a pub, but you can't drink
- 16 or 17 - you can buy or be bought cider or beer, but only to have with a meal in a restaurant/pub that serves food
- Under 18 - apart from beer or cider with food, it's illegal for under 18s to buy alcohol in a pub, off-licence or a shop, and it's illegal to buy alcohol for someone who is under 18
Experts reckon you're even more likely to reach for the *** packet when you're tipsy. With every *** shortening your life by seven to eleven minutes, that occasional 'social' pack of ten suddenly doesn't seem quite so harmless. Especially when you realise that what you fork out on two packs of 20 cigs every weekend could get you an iPod in four and a half months!
The Damage
We may know the health risks of necking a double voddie 'n' Coke and chugging on a ***...But what's it doing to your looks?
Skin
After the sun, cigarettes are the most damaging thing for your skin as they cause wrinkles. And booze isn't much better...Gulping back the G&Ts is really dehydrating. Binge-boozing can cause broken veins under the skin too.
Tummy
Alcohol doesn't just swell up a flat tum, it can make you bigger all over. If a ****tail is dripping with cream and shots, it's the same as snacking on eighteen Kit Kat fingers! Oh, and don't think **** will help you lose weight...Scientists reckon smokers are more likely to store weight around the waist.
Eyes
A heavy session of drinking and boozing can leave eyes tired, dull and smaller. Also, expect your peepers to get bloodshot from being in a smoky
atmosphere.
Teeth
Cigs can turn your teeth yellow, thanks to nicotine's staining power. As if that's not bad enough, smokers are fout times more likely to suffer from gum disease. And boozing won't make you any more kissable. Sugary drinks make you more prone to tooth decay and bad breath - and don't think chewing gum will blitz that *** breath, it doesn't work!
Stay Safe
Never let someone pressure you into driking - it's your body, you make the choices!
If your mates think you're dull for not drinking, drag them onto the dancefloor and show them how to make a really good time!
But if you are drinking...
It's safer to buy your own drinks, but if you're accepting a drink from someone, go to the bar with them so you know it hasn't been spiked.
Keep active when you're drinking - it will help you pace yourself.
Avoid straight spirits and dilute your drink with plenty of mixer.
Don't drink when you're unhappy - drink makes things seem worse!
Always stay with your mates and make sure you get home safely.
