The newly-designed £20 note featuring the Scottish 18th century economist Adam Smith hits the streets today. The new image will be the first time a Scot has appeared on a Bank of England note.



An image of Mr Smith already appears on some Scottish £50 notes. Mr Smith is considered one of the fathers of modern economics and his most renowned book, The Wealth of Nations, is widely cited by supporters of free markets.
The existing £20 note, which has an image of the English composer Edward Elgar, will be gradually withdrawn from circulation over the next two years. The new £20 note has a brighter purple colour to make it more recognisable although it will be the same size as the existing notes.
