Ever since February of this year, the mp3 player rumor mills have been churning out post after post about the upcoming 6th generation iPod. Words of release dates, patent information, and fan made photoshop mockups have been all across the web. However, what of all the hype is real, and what is just hope? The following is a brief rundown of all the info we currently have heard about the 6th gen iPod and how it stacks up against the facts.

2.11.06 - Touchscreen Patent.



From all accounts the patent application (seen here) appears to be the real deal. The patent was published on Feb. 2, 2006 and shows great detail about the workings of an up and coming touchscreen for the iPod. The patent shows figures that depict a translucent touchscreen scroll wheel that appears and disappears over the main screen of the iPod. This technology appears to be inline with Apple’s current products while simultaneously revolutionizing their line of mp3 players as well. None of their products, since the Newton, has utilized a touchscreen, so this could really be a breakthrough for the modern market.

2.24.06 - The Leaked Photo



This photo, supposedly leaked from deep inside Cupertino, has been one of the most controversial elements of all the 6th generation iPod rumors. It looked very similar to the 5th generation iPod photos that came out the day before they were released. This very fact led many to believe that this was indeed, the real deal. However, less than a week after this picture made the rounds of all the tech news sites, a video appeared on YouTube showing exactly how this picture was made. The video, while demonstrating some masterful Photoshop skills, pretty much closed the case on the small chance that this pic was real. Many diehards, however, point to some small descrepancies between the video and the image. These descrepancies are few and do little to actually give the picture any real credit.

2.28.06 - Jobs Keynote



On the day that many expected the 6th gen iPod to finally make it’s appearance Apple dropped a bombshell (not the good kind). At the Steve Jobs Keynote, the iPod Hi-Fi, an iPod enabled boombox that almost no one has bought, was released instead of the much anticipated new iPod. This announcement proved to be a letdown for all Apple fans as there was neither a new iPod nor was any new info released. The world now waited for Apple’s 30th anniversary for any big announcements. Unfortunately, this happened to fall on April Fool’s day.

3.06.06 - More Pictures and Video



Again we have more “leaked” pictures of the new iPod. We’ve heard no word whether these images are photoshopped or not, but we aren’t holding our breath. These pics supposedly were snapped on top of the new iPod Hi-Fi, which may or may not give it more credibility - you decide.

Also on this day, a new video emerges of the supposed 6th generation iPod in action. The video is very short (3 seconds) but shows some very interesting promise. The video shows the translucent touch scroll wheel in action as a movie is played in widescreen format. The video also depicts a dropdown bar that appears only when the controls are accessed. While there is no proof of this video’s authenticity it provides alot of extra excitement over the new iPod. In my personal opinion, this is real. Eventhough the video could have been faked, there is now just too much evidence pointing to an full touch-screen iPod.

4.01.06 - Apple’s 30th Anniversary
This day marked the 30th anniversary of Apple. Because of this, many people expected a big announcement to be made, possibly about the new iPod. However, this day also happens to be April Fool’s Day, the one day of the year that the entire internet seems to implode on itself. Several sites claimed to be at the Apple press conference where the new iPod was being announced. This, of course, was a joke. Apple was surprisingly silent on this day, as no new info was released at all regarding the 6th gen player.

4.13.06 - The Delay
This was the last piece of gossip that we received regarding the new iPod. Supposedly, there was some type of problem with the touch screen interface and Apple wisely decided to hold the entire shipment until all issues were resolved. I’m not sure if I buy this, but I suppose it is plausible. The new release date on the street is sometime in Q4 of this year, just before the holidy season.

While the past five months have proved to be kind of crazy regarding the new 6th generation iPod, we are definitely on the verge of a new product release. Whether it be the holiday season or sometime before, we are eagerly waiting for it so we can snatch one up and review it as soon as humanly possible.

So it will be out before New years
