Well the core/arcade is the very, very bog standard version of the Xbox 360. It comes with a wired control pad, memory card (if your lucky), and thats it. Halo 3 can't even work on a core unless you bought a hard drive seperately. You can get online with it if you have a ethernet and a memory card/hard drive.

The full version of the console comes with wireless control pad, 20 gig hdd (120 if you get an Elite), A headset, and ethernet cable.

The changes seem very insignificant, but you DO need the hardrive, whether that be the smaller or bigger one, I'd rather have the bigger to store more things on it, but its up to you.

If your abit short on the cash front, just wait and get a premium. You really do need the hardrive in the months to come.

Because you need a HDD if you want to play online.

Aslong as you have some sort of memory system (at least a card) you can play online can't you?

At the moment, you cannot play Halo 3 unless you have a hard drive. I imagine more games will be more like that in the times to come.

You've gotta be joking, why the hell would you need a HDD in to play a game?

I don't know. But it says on the back of the Halo 3 case that you need one. Maybe `cause theres lots of things to do with the file sharing things?

It doesn't say that. It says "Optimised for hard drive" but it doesn't say you need one to play on Live.
