    it's a favicon image.

    the image needs to be 16x16px adn needs to be saved as a .ico (Windows Icon File).

    Upload it to your site and add this code to your site pages in between the <head></head> tags.:

    HTML Code:
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.thenameofyoursitehere.com/favicon.ico" />

    Is there any way to convert images from, say, GIF or PNG to an ICO file?

    import into paint, resize it so there is no white showing and type .ico at the end when you select save as...>all files

    You can have animated icons in Firefox. As other members have said, research upon "favicon". Easy way to convert from .gif to .ico, is top open a image editor such as photoshop (even paint), and manually type in the extension .ico and it will save the file.
