Halo 3 Help

I'm not much good at gaming (Never have been) and I'm stuck at one of the final bits of the Tzaro Highway mission on normal [Halo 3]

Basically I've tried around 30 times and just no luck, there's lots of beasts, I could eventually fight them off but there is one of them things which has unlimited bullets and just a gun which can shoot you from above controller by a person. It's really hard to get him out of it, as you always die first.

I've watched a few walk throughs and they recommend hijacking a big enemy vehicle a few checkpoints before, but I don't know how to go back checkpoints and there's no point walking back as I destroyed. I really can't be bothered to restart the mission, anyone got any suggestions and is it possible to go back checkpoints?

Im not 100% sure, because iv'e completed it and never been on it since, however, im sure that you can select the mission and start from a different check point? I may be wrong, but give it a go.
