OK, well my dad bought me a laptop so I dont have to save up for that anymore, so I'm going to save up for a home server thing... Either a machine or a rack I don't have a clue...

So I need you... Suggest what models, parts and what OS or software I should install, as I dont have a clue..

This server will be used as a home one, on a network for storing accounts, their my documents etc and hosting an intranet throughout the home. I'm bored, so ye...

I should have about £260 ish in 2 months ish and even more by Christmas... So suggest away.

Sorry, but is it really worth it? Like what are you going to store on there? A few documents and songs?

Unless your storing 100's of GB's of data that can be accessed remotley i don't think a server is really necessary..

We have a hell of a lot of computers in our home, so all the accounts and their documents will be held on it aswell...

    over 100 accounts?

    Nevermind, it's your money.

You won't need a very powerful machine at all. Perhaps you'd need a lot of hard disk space depending on what your storing.

I recommend something with a cheap celeron processor.

Maybe gigabit ethernet also if you want fast file transfers. Although that won't really matter if you're going to access the network wirelessly

Windows Server 2003 would be good.

But really mate, you don't need a powerful processor for a home server. A celeron will do the job perfectly. If it's a file server then the hard drives do all the work, not the processor. So there's no point overspending on something you don't need.

Google run most of their servers with celeron processors.

Remember - a server isn't a type of machine, it's a type of software that is running on the machine. So really you could set any old computer that you don't use, stick a large hard drive in and you can use that.

As I got my laptop, I have to sell my old machine (I think ) But its still here... But it only has 80GB.

I might just buy a cheap computer and upgrade it... Or just make my own one...

Its proccessor is intel celeron D

Edit: Unless I dual boot it with my laptop... I have a good 60GB left...

    Its a HPG6062EA

It's really pointless setting up a home server, buy a 500gb hard drive set up a network and share the drive. Sharing accounts through network is pointless mate.
