American Death Note Movie!?

While checking out Death Note on IMDb I saw that there was another Death Note movie that has been announced for release in 2010. I thought to myself, this couldn't be another Japanese remake, and it's only called Death Note, unlike the Japanese ones - It has to be an American production.

I searched around and found that it is indeed, an American Death Note movie.

Within Universal's production notes for The Strangers it has been revealed - under producer Doug Davison's bio - writers Vlas and Charles Parlapanides are penning an American remake of Death Note for Vertigo Films. The brothers are currently overseeing the development of CW's upcoming television series Undercover, directed by John Stockwell (Turistas).

Universal Pictures has revealed that Vertigo Entertainment (not “Vertigo Films,” which is an unrelated film production company) is developing an American live action film adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s supernatural suspense manga story Death Note. The Death Note franchise has already spawned three live action films in Japan. Brothers Vlas and Charles Parlapanides have been hired to construct a screenplay for an American Death Note feature.

Originally a popular manga series, it was made into two live-action movies (Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name) that became instant Japanese blockbusters upon their releases in 2006.

Another live action adaptation of Death Note is in the works, but this time, it's a Hollywood-based project. The rights have been snapped up by movie producers Vertigo Entertainment, famous for their involvement in the many US adaptations of Asian horror movies (including the popular remakes of the Grudge and the Departed (a remake of Infernal Affairs)). The two names attached to the project so far are writers Vlas and Charles Parlapanides, neither of which have much experience.

Death Note, in the hands of unexperienced Hollywood fools. If this goes ahead, it will be a total failure. First Dragonball, then Ghost in the Shell, then Akira and now Death Note! There's even going to be 3 live action Avatar: The Last Airbender movies! Why can't film-makers get it in their head that people don't want anime remade into live action.

Omg! it was bad enough they made a japanese film and ruined it. Now the American one will be 100 X worse. They shld just leave it alone. It was one of the greatest animes ever and now slowly they are killing it.

The only place showing DN was one London cinema wasn't it? I didn't wanna go 70 miles for a film that'll probably be a dissapointment.
