The jet pack is hardly that remarkable, it wasn't even headline news. Very few people vision jet packs as the future and are actually bothered about someone whizzing across the English channel, I wouldn't go around telling your grandchildren that you remember the day someone used a Jet Pack to get across the English Channel, it probably won't even matter.
The LHC did start, yes, but it'll only be remembered once it actually makes some breakthroughs, so far it's only done about one. As it's broken it looks like 2009 might be the year now
