Signing up to live.

Ok, I don't normally use live but I had an account which I never used.
I'm about to sign up for gold but I wanted to know if it was possible to use my original account I made when I first got my xbox - The one that isn't connected to xbox live and has all my gamerscore and achievements on.

Or do I have to set up a new account for xbox live?

The last million* times I tried signing up I went through the account management and it would end up me creating a new gamertag altogether.

Couldn't he just edit the name of the original account to something original then sign that account up for live?

Surely then he wouldn't have to change.

I didn't have to change.. just before I had to for some reason.
Right now the account is done !
