    Default AS/A Level Options

I'm 16 and leave school at the end of the school year in 2009.
Last night, I went to an open evening at the local Post Sixteen Centre to learn about the different subjects I could take.

I am allowed to take four subjects (drop one after the first year).

My ambition is to either become a Primary School Teacher or have something to do with Media (TV Work, Journalism etc.)

My dilemna is which options to take. At the evening, I looked at the ones that were interest to me:

    - English Language (Need to become a teacher)
    - Maths (Need to become a teacher)
    - Media Studies (Need for the media job)
    - Geography (purely because it is enjoyable/ specialised subject in primary teaching)
    - Physics (I've looked up that you don't need a Science A level to become a teacher, but need to pass in GCSE to become a teacher, so this would just be for enjoyment)
    - ICT (again, just enjoyment)

Which out of those would you select?

In my enrichment period at Post Sixteen, I would get a work placement in a school to add onto my CV

    Thanks in advance,
    Nathan ;D

well yh do english & media. if u wanna go into media, then they're the most important obviously out of wot u selected. but being a primary school teacher & doing media related jobs r totally different so you'll need to decide which one you wanna aim for before picking ur alevels.

i currently do media, film, sociology and english language. planning on going to uni to study media (not sure what area yet) in 2010.

The media and primary school teaching are both extremely competitive so you need to choose one and choose subjects specific and specialised for either.

    Hi mate,

    - English Language (Need to become a teacher) - You don't need this at all (unless english where it would be good) and it's a bit of an odd a level according to my mates. I'd stay clear.

    - Maths (Need to become a teacher) - You don't need this to become a teacher (unless it is a maths teacher) , and if you don't really like maths that much you'll find it boring, and as it is so hard and demanding (not first hand experience, but you know) you could fail.

    - Media Studies (Need for the media job) - You won't need it for a media job, but it'd probably help you. It's very different to media gcse, and it's pretty interesting. I would reccomend it to you, slightly easier as well.

    - Geography (purely because it is enjoyable/ specialised subject in primary teaching) - If you enjoy it then go ahead

    - Physics (I've looked up that you don't need a Science A level to become a teacher, but need to pass in GCSE to become a teacher, so this would just be for enjoyment) - You really won't find physics enjoyable.

    - ICT (again, just enjoyment) - Meh.

How about taking up some subjects that come in at a level like Sociology, psychology, economics or something?

    English Lang
    Maths
    Media Studies
Whichever you most prefer out of geagraphy and physics (physics is my personal preference by far)

I'd recommend dropping one after the first year. If you go off the idea of media then make sure that's the one you drop.

You DON'T need English Language or English Literature at A-Level to become a teacher. A primary school level anyway.

I'm wanting to become a teacher and I'm not taking an English A-Level.

For you I would suggest, english, media studies, ict and any other easy subject you like, them three are pretty intense.
