My uncle just gave me his old 2G because he just bought the 3G but I already have a 3G and he said well he would of binned it so have it anyway.

I heard with a 2G you can pay so much + the 2G for a 3G, is this correct? If it is then I can give it to a mate for his Bday

I don't know where you are but in the US you can take it in and pay I think $100 to upgrade.
