But Tony Scott, 56, took a hit to his bank account not his waistline when he stopped to buy a sandwich two weeks ago - and was robbed of £500k worth of jewellery.
"I was only gone from my car for five minutes," says the dad-of-two from Leicester.
"But in that time they cleared me out of my life savings. Now I have no money and no idea how I will pay the bills.
"I've lost my job, my home and all hope of retiring any time soon ... all in broad daylight."
Tony is a jeweller, selling gems at country shows and fairs around the country. He had just finished a long day at the Cotswold Show, near Cirencester, when the thieves struck.
"I remember leaving the show exhausted," he says.
"I have a chronic heart condition so lugging heavy bags of jewellery around and manning the stand takes it out of me.
"On top of that I'd been on the road for over a week, first at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh and then at the Norfolk Show."
"Because of my health, my partner Julie has given up her own job to help me but I was on my own that weekend.
"I remember being anxious all day trying to make sure nothing was stolen from the stand and that took it out of me too. Maybe that's why I let my guard down."
My views are as follows, at the end of the day why would you leave £500 K worth of jewels in your car, just to go and get a sandwich? :S
Very careless act on behalf of Tony Scott as they do tell you not the leave valuables in your car.
