Generally cautions last longer.. bans are issued for more severe or prolonged rule breaking but they don't last as long because they are a more complete form of punishment. If he continues to break the rules his bans will be longer though.

but me and my good friend wyked were both cautioned on the same day.
a few days later
he got banned
and then his ban was up
so surely he should go back to cautioned until its tomorrow.

The caution would of expired underneath the ban. It would be at Forum Management's discretion as to whether they would add the caution again now... I am sure you wouldn't wanna do that to your friend.
