Default How to tell my family...

I've wanted to be a forensic scientist for a while. However, that dream ended. I have a massive passion for teaching. I want to teach! My mother thinks that I want to be a forensic scientist, I mentioned that I thought about teaching, she just replied "Pfft, you don't want to be a teacher do you? They have horrible pay, you want to have professor by your name or something".

My heart is set on teaching, I'm not going to let her get in the way, but my Mum, and my whole family, are very stereotypical and racist. I can't believe I was brought up by them tbh. If I say I want to be a teacher, they'd probably think I was homosexual. As that's a "homosexual norm" supposedly?! It's a "womans job". Idc if it was or wasn't, I want to teach.

BUT, how do I tell her? My grandad, who is, unfortunately, close to death, says "I am fighting for my life, just for you. I want to see you graduate from university" I don't want to upset him, when I see him he gets excited because I'm going to be this big forensic scientist.

Much more straight teachers than gay teachers in my opinion.
Just tell them you want to be a teacher, it's your decision not there's

Teaching isn't a gay or feminine profession :S also what are you wanting to teach? You'll still need to go to uni, get a degree and then do a separate teaching course, so you can really still go along the forensics line if that still interests you, and then once you've got the degree decide whether you want to go into that or teaching or whatever else opens itself up

edit: the degree you get doesn't need to relate in any way to what subject you want to teach, it'll only help in that you'll already know the subject

yeah, you have to go to uni. maybe do a science related degree once that's finished you can tell them you've decided to be a teacher.

I'm doing a join course. "Primary and Secondary science teaching" or something along those lines. 3 years and it'll fully qualify me to teach science in either a Primary or Secondary school.

Being a teacher is a very good respectable job. You're mum has just probably got so use to you saying that you want to be a forensic scientist that she has set her heart on her little boy becoming one. She just wants to be able to tell her friends that 'oh my boy is a forensic scientist' blablabla. It's you're life and you should do what you want with it. Good luck!
