    Okay, SO. Im using OSX currently, BUT i was thinking of buying an external hard drive to use as a TIME MACHINE drive?

    I want to back up everything before i reformat.

    back-up before reformat seems like a must to me?

    Ah, if that's the case then yeah - any old external hard drive can be used as a time machine drive I believe. I use a partition on my external as a time machine drive but I haven't used it in god knows how long.

    When I owned a Mac I used a standard Western Digital external hard drive for time machine backups. I also even used it to put my music and other files on there from my main hard drive. It’s very easy to do via OSX.
