BBC Sport - Football - Richard Dunne critical of Fifa award for Republic

Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne said talk of Fifa giving his side a special award following their World Cup exit was "taking the mickey".

"It's taking the mickey - give the Irish a plaque instead of going to the World Cup. It's a sop."

"It doesn't affect me one little bit what Fifa will do with Thierry Henry," Dunne said.

"Whether he plays in the World Cup or not, I won't be. Whatever Fifa do will probably be wrong anyway.

"From the moment the rules were changed for the play-offs, when the seedings were brought in, it was decided they wanted France through.

"It's always the same way Fifa think about Irish football. Unless you are a massive country or have massive sponsorship you're not going to be welcome."

well yesterday a west brom player handballed the ball into the back of the net to equalise against derby. we haven't gone to the football league asking for the match to be replayed, an extra playoff position or the player to be banned for the rest of the season.

aye, but theres a big difference between a championship league game and a world cup qualifying playoff!

Think the same happened with Arshavin last year, but he said to the ref that it wasn't a pen and I'm sure it still got given :rolleyes:

Yeah he denied a penalty which would have been awarded to him. I'm pretty sure the ref didn't give him it either in the end.

Arshavin actually said to the ref it wasn't but it was still given. Hredairsson did nothing during the game then said it wasn't a pen after.

Refs hate to get told there wrong. That's why protesting after a goal or penalty is given is really pointless as it hardly ever leads to anything.

I think that they should do what they do in Tennis and Cricket sometimes. The captain gets to call for 3 replays a match and only 3. If he wastes it, he wastes it. That way, the captain has more responsibility and if the players swarm the ref, then the ref should be able to say it's upto your captain to ask for a replay or not. Might be a stupid idea but I like it

I do admire Terry for the Chelsea game, he was the only digified Chelsea player there. The rest acted poorly. Even when the Adebayor goal was scored (2nd one), Terry told everyone else to go away and he went to speak with the ref.

The plaque.. well what a stupid thing to do. FIFA are admitting that Ireland got cheated out of a place but won't do anything constructive about it.
