Online retailer or High Street Retailer?
Never argue with an idiot, he'll drag you down to his level, and beat you with experience.

You can get a 42" pretty cheap (400ish) here; http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166541
But as for a 50" tv, i cant really suggest any as my usual haunts don't seem to be stocking them at the moment (possibly sold out due to Christmas)
Any, online or high street.
I just need to get a engineer to come out form a report that its unrepairable.
There's too many to say, but maybe try here? There's alot of different LCD TV's you may like.

Hope this helps.
I'm burnin' up for you baby.
Maybe Sony's Bravia range would be a idea, I have a bravia and so does my dad downstairs exellent models
Ross
I also recommend the Bravia range, they look very slick and have a nice interface. I think some of the newer ones also have some extra features which are pretty cool.
Although all of the 50" Bravias are out of your price range. But there are a couple of 46" ones in range.
The best screen size I can get is:

or

The last option is if you are willing to pay a couple more grand more then you can get a beautiful 540p tiny OLED tv...
