Default i think my ps3 is bust

i started to download a demo from the store then set it to download in the background. when i did my ps3 started freezing up and eventually froze altogether. i turned it off and left it and went back to it earlier today. i can get up to picking which profile i want to go on but the XMB wont load, it just has the little loading icon in the top right but nothing happens. plus if i try and turn it off it either doesnt pick up that im using the controller or i'll tell it to turn off but the light on the console just flashes like its about to turn off but never does. i just need to cancel the download somehow

    what do i do? D:

a post suggests you need to reformat your hard drive

    taken directly from a post:
While your PS3 is on, hold down the Power button until it bleeps under your finger (This resets it so that it can go into recovery mode)
Then hold down while powering on, you will hear one beep, then 7 seconds later another and than another second later 2 beeps in a row, then let go.
Selet rebuild database. You shouldnt lose any files.
