    Default Project Canvas

Just wondering if anyone has heard of Project Canvas and what there thoughts are - do you think it could be a success or not.

Project Canvas is simply a project trying to create a open internet-connected television platform with the BBC, Chanel 4, ITV plc, Arqiva, BT and TalkTalk all partners together. Channel 5 - or simply Five, was involved but due to their financial situation had to drop out and rumours are Orange are considering joining.

From what I know the idea is simple - a way you'd be able to get stuff such as 4OD, BBC iPlayer and other services right from your TV - allowing you to watch stuff when away from your computer and not needing something like a PS3 and so on.

However you will need a certain set up box according to the site. The only problem I can see with this is, the service sounds really promising, but would people like myself with sky not be able to get it?

What do you think. Check out http://www.projectcanvas.info/ for more information.

Anyone who is remotely interested in this already has the equipment to do so. Virgin, Sky, Freesat and even some freeview boxes already have access to some if not all of these services so why are the BBC wasting yet more money on this?

As Jameseh said, anyone remotely interested is already doing it, We just preordered a "3view" box to do all this, heh, if it was me I would have just stuck to a Win Media Center box.

Was kinda hoping they'd port it to the freesat HD boxes (like iplayer is), but I read somewhere they're not going to for one reason or another.

Although to get one with a decent amount of storage, dual TV tuners, a Blu-Ray drive and Windows 7 eventually amounts up to a fair amount of money I mean, even to get a decent case that will look good sitting under your TV, you're looking at over £100 already.

A lot of people would be interested in one just don't know about stuff or lack of money.

I do think project canvas could work myself.

Nope, don't stack a HTPC with hard drives. HDDs are easily the noisiest thing in my PC. You use a small SSD or or SD memory card connected via IDE as a boot drive and store everything over your network with gigabit ethernet. Then you can get a smaller, cheaper case . You don't really need dual tuners. You watch something on the normal TV and record with the HTPC. How often you you need to record 2 things at the same time? If you miss something then download it. Recorded stuff from your HTPC is over 1GB per hour at SD resolutions and still has the adverts.

    Blu-Ray - PS3?
