Default Problem with CD/DVD drive Freezing

A bit back I bought a new CD Drive from Maplin (not the best places I know but quite handy for me)

I can't remember the exact model but noticed while it could read it couldn't write yet was cleary a CD/DVD re-writable - Windows however wasn't detecting it could write and I tried a few tips, even some from microsoft.

They took it back, sent it to Samsung (the manufacturer) and gave me a new slightly different model - SH-S223C - the problem however is I haven't been even able to try and burn at the moment. Putting a CD in and trying to play it just freezes the whole computer. I decided to try and update the driver with no luck.

Now I know about the event viewer, just not really how to fully understand stuff.
I've noticed two errors common together:

"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom3.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

"The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort3, is not ready for access yet.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

I tried to swap the SATA cable over with a spare and this still freezes.

Does anyone know what might be causing it - I'd hate to send it back to get another free replacement that just does the same thing.

    Thanks.

You may close this thread now for months this problem has been happening and after changing the SATA cable last night it seemed to not work until now its finally been able to simply read a cd

Edit - got my hopes up to quickly - its freezing when trying to play cd - I don't know why, even when hardly anything at all is running it does this.

Righty o, is it IDE or SATA (im guessing IDE from your errors but you never know)...

The errors explained above mean that either your IDE/SATA drivers are crap, your IDE/SATA cables are crap or the IDE/SATA ports are crap on your motherboard.

If you're using IDE, replace the cable, if you have more than 1 ports, change the port, if its SATA, once again, change cable or change ports...

Sorry if I mis read your thread

Try uninstalling / reinstalling the driver in device manager, although it does sound like a hardware issue. Also check for a loose S/PATA connection at either ends of the cable.

If you have another desktop in your household try putting it in that to test it. Sounds like it could be a dodgy cable or even a faulty controller on your mobo.
