Do you not lose half the items because of the lava? I thought drowning traps were easiest

If the mobs are jumping when they hit, he'll lose the drops, yes. However, to fix this, simply make the area 2 high so they can't jump.
And lava traps are easiest if you know how to work them. (Me.)
