vBulletin sucks ass, if you're going down that route get IP.Board

There's nothing wrong with free forum software, there are many very large communities that run on free software like phpBB, MyBB etc.

A nice skin and active community

Get it active with your mates, get them to post about and help yourself by having about 5 accounts yourself, post with all of them and make the forum look active.

People will join an active forum no matter what software it uses which is why the software still exists
