Default [Apple] iPad 2 - Is This Smart?

    Hello!

Today I am faced with a very difficult question that needs an honest answer as I may make the wrong decision.

Allow me to state my confusion: I have an iPod Touch and a cell phone. I have the option to get the iPad 2 with Data on it and turn it into my cell phone. Should I do it?

At first it sounds a bit insane, I admit. But once you stop to think about it, it is extremely logical. You can purchase an iPad 2 now under AT&T or Verizon with NO commitment or contract. It would cost only $25 for 2g of data roaming if I went to AT&T where as Verizon allows you to choose 3g, 4g, and 5g of Data. According to the data maps where I live, AT&T is the best coverage. (Verizon is actually bad over here and is only noted for their download speed).

Now, I'm sure we all know that there are free texting and calling apps on the App Market and there's Skype as well. I could, in all reality, take the iPad 2 with a data plan and turn it into my new cell phone. The only con that bothers me the most is the size and weight. I would have to carry it around 24/7 but I can live with that, as it would come in handy at certain times.

My biggest issue is knowing whether 2g is enough and that I won't exceed that amount, if you go over you start getting charged $10 extra on AT&T. I could connect to Wi-Fi when possible and use it for my texting and calling, but when I'm away from it, would the 2g's of data be enough or too little? I would be using the iPad to browse and everything while texting and calling, it would be pointless to not too. I'm not worried about battery either as I could easily go buy a battery adapter for extra life.

I've managed to weight out as much pros and cons as I could and in the end, I find out there is ways all around my cons. However, I am once again faced with a large issue. Would me spending close to $900 on all the extras and iPad itself be worth the trouble, or is it smarter to just keep my iPod and cell phone?

Please note that I ran all the numbers and did the math, if I was to drop my cell phone from my family bill we would save $60 a month dropping the bill from $205 to $145 which is way better.

    So good idea or not??

You'd be a fool to change your phone for your iPad. Simply don't. I got an iPad and just used my phone's data to tether it, one data plan and I ended up with a proper phone and an iPad.

Does this mean you'd have to walk about with an iPad to your ear? Please do it, then post pictures so I can laugh.

I cannot rep you, but I wish I could.

I wouldn't do this to be honest - scrapping a mobile for a tablet computer seems absurd.

And considering the fact it would be in a case, I'm sure it'd look normal...

Why ask a question if you don't like the answers.

An iPad is a tablet computer, a phone is a phone.
