Default Manchester City's new stadium sponsorship

Manchester City have scored a new stadium sponsorship with Etihad, meaning the stadium will now be officially named the Etihad Stadium.

Fair enough you may think as stadium sponsorship is becoming more prevelant, however, Etihad in Arabic means United. Which means that Manchester City's stadium will be named the United Stadium. Great thinking, great thinking.

    It doesn't convert to United.

Firstly, it's a name, so technically it's 'Etihad' in every language.

But if you are going to actually convert the word itself, it means 'unity' or 'union'.

Defenders of the lost ark are here.

When asked if the word could also mean ‘United’ he said: “Yes, it can also stand for union, alliance, friendship and united.”

That's from Mr.Mohammed Nizami, a native Arabic speaker.

As I said on FM-Base, it's all about semantics. Etihad translates to unity which of course, is united however you wouldn't called Manchester United 'Manchester Unity' so why call the stadium the 'United Stadium'?

It's a synonym of unity, thus it is the same thing so it can be called either. It's been 'christened' United Stadium for banter purposes.

End of the day they named the stadium because Ethidad paid them... I bet they don't care what they call it as long as they get paid

End of the day I'm not fussed, if it was Maine Road it'd be a different matter however the vast majority didn't call it 'The City of Manchester Stadium', it was either 'Eastlands' or 'CoMs', mainly 'Eastlands' so it'll no doubt still be 'Eastlands'. Although what with the Etihad Campus being planned many have adopted the 'Blue Camp', personally I'm not too keen.

I dont really give a toss what our stadium name is tbh, hate to sound rash but lets face it, before the new deal it was the 'City of Manchester stadium' but got called Eastlands, and it will still be referred to as Eastlands.
