Sarkozy insult to 'island' Britain: Snarling French president dismisses the English saying 'you don't understand Europe'

Outburst: Nicolas Sarkozy's insult to the 'island' of Britain won't go down very well on these shores

French president Nicolas Sarkozy launched an astonishing attack on Britain’s attitude to Europe last night. The furious French leader was branded the ‘new de Gaulle’ after claiming the British can’t comprehend Europe because we are ‘an island’. 'You come from an island, so maybe you don’t understand the subtleties of European construction,’ he snapped at BBC Newsnight’s economics editor Paul Mason. Mr Sarkozy had been asked whether it was right for the European Union to be attempting to block an EU referendum and install a coalition government in Greece.

Snub: Sarkozy's relationship is not thought to be too great at the moment after he snapped at the British PM in Brussels last week

His outburst was quickly seen as evidence that the diminutive French premier has contempt for both Greece and Britain. His comments come less than two weeks after he snapped at David Cameron at a Brussels summit, telling the Prime Minister to stop telling the eurozone ‘what to do’ about the economic crisis. ‘You have lost a good opportunity to shut up,’ he said. Also at the Brussels summit Mr Sarkozy publicly snubbed Mr Cameron by turning away as the Prime Minister offered his hand in friendship.

Eurosceptics fear the big eurozone countries are using the economic calamity to rush headlong into the fiscal union they have always wanted – and see an effective end to independent nation states. They accused Mr Sarkozy of having ‘contempt’ for Britain and democracy. Tory MP Philip Davies said: ‘This just shows what the project is all about. President Sarkozy is not interested in what we have to say. He is only interested in getting his hands on our money. He’s behaving like the new Charles de Gaulle, another French leader who didn’t want us in Europe. But I’m right behind him. I don’t want us in the EU either.’

Outspoken: French TV aired an interview with Sarkozy and U.S. President Barack Obama last night (Friday) - it is unknown whether the French premier has any criticisms of the U.S

Fellow Tory Douglas Carswell added: ‘The French president is behaving with complete contempt just as the Euro elite always does to countries with long, proud traditions of national self-determination.’ Conservative MP Mark Reckless accused Mr Sarkozy and other EU leaders of a dangerous power-grab. He said: ‘I think if the Greeks want to have a referendum, they should be allowed to. And what seems to be happening here is the EU leaders, who hate referendums – whenever people get a chance to vote, they vote against the EU – they’ve said, “If you allow a referendum, then we’ll cut off the money”. So they’re almost forcing the Greek leaders not to allow their people to have a say.'

France and Germany are threatening to agree their own intergovernmental treaty allowing their economies to converge, excluding Britain, if Mr Cameron tries to use negotiations to meet a Tory pledge to claw back powers from Brussels. Meanwhile, Italy was last night forced to call in international inspectors to oversee its finances as fears mounted it will be the next victim of the eurozone crisis. It has debts of £1.6trillion – a whopping 120 per cent of GDP. Prime minister Silvio Berlusconi agreed to the humiliating step during crunch talks with other EU leaders after weeks of fierce pressure from the financial markets and global leaders.

In an extraordinary outburst, Mr Berlusconi said that life in Italy has got worse since the introduction of the single currency more than a decade ago. ‘Italians have been impoverished since the introduction of the euro,’ he said.
Well its just typical isn't it? we stupidly throw our money at their failed currency (when only a few years ago they and some of our own politcal elite laughed at us, the 'little englanders' and our 'doomed' island currency) and thats the thanks you get from the European Union and as always, the French President. To think, our ridiculous Prime Minister David Cameron is preparing to throw more money at this walking disaster of the Euro.

I have said in the past and it remains true, those who say 'relations with Europe would turn cold' with the United Kingdom leaving the European Union are wrong, it would improve relations. The EU itself is already turning Greece against Germany and Italy against France and Germany (its getting rather serious with the bad feeling between peoples) in the same way Eastern European countries have hate towards the Russian Federation, because of the Soviet Union. If it is this bad now, what would a European Superstate cause? war?

On a side note, aren't we supposed to be sharing aircraft carriers with this clown? yikes!

    Thoughts? out now?

To think we signed a 50 year defence deal with this idiot is absolutely sickening. Its rather obvious hes "trying" to copy America in regards to presidential style (£300million plane complete with bread ovens anyone?). Its absolutely shameful he shows no respect towards our country and its representitives regardless of who they are. Let's not forget if it wasn't for us, I guarantee they wouldnt be speaking french at this moment in time. My deepest sympathy goes out to our fallen heroes who I would think are turning in their graves at the way the country they served with their lives is being mocked and abused on an international basis.

Never-the-less, the power of an "economic prison" has clearly went to moron merkels and stupid sarkozys head.

Enough is enough, it's about time David Cameron stood up and let them know who is the boss. As for all of you who think its perfectly acceptable to insult the UK on an international basis then let me tell you, we were the most powerful nation in the world just 60+ years ago and when compared to others (apart from the USA) are still a so called global power of whom respect NEEDS to be shown.

No doubt as Sarkozy begins his re-election campaign, snubbing the British looks good to the French electorate. I'm sure if Cameron did a similar thing to the French in the run-up to an election, it'd be seen in a good light by the British public. However wrong it all is, it wouldn't be surprising in the slightest if this is what's going on. I'd of thought Sarkozy and Cameron would be "best of friends", milking "their" victory in Libya seeing as it began as a joint Anglo-French operation before the Americans stepped in but seems quite the opposite.

3 words: Small man syndrome. Ignore the little French man. He's under a lot of stress lately because he's trying to make the Euro look more impressive than it actually is. The ignorant little man doesn't realise how important the UK is to their pathetic little currency and the continent, and he doesn't realise that people who invest in something should also have say in how it is run. The man needs a slap, and his toys returned to his crib.
