In group conversations, it has like "phases" where I cannot receive or send messages which can range from 5 minutes to what is now currently a few hours. Any ideas on the issue?

I find skype a bit dodgy these days. The mobile app often doesn't tell me when people are online even when the wifi is working properly and a decent speed.

Skype is awful, I have to agree with @peteyt; I find myself using TinyChat or Facetime now.
Plus as soon as you wack the mic on in Skype, that's where it all starts going downhill.

Try disabling Skype's ability to use port 80/443.

    Tools > Options > Advanced > Connection
