Default George Entwistle resigns as BBC director general

The BBC's director general, George Entwistle, has resigned in the wake of the Newsnight child abuse broadcast.

In a statement given outside New Broadcasting House, Mr Entwistle said: "I have decided that the honourable thing to do is to step down."

Earlier, Mr Entwistle said the Newsnight report, which wrongly implicated ex-senior Tory Lord McAlpine should never have been broadcast.

ooh didn't last very long did he. He's very unlucky that there's just been scandal after scandal during his tenure but don't think he's been very good fanning the flames

If all is true, I hope those on the left who couldn't shut up about the Catholic Church treat the BBC in the same way.

    They won't though of course.

If you're on about mocking the BBC for what happened with Saville then there have been plenty of "lefties" who have done so.

The last two/three episodes of Have I Got News For You show this quite well (Farage was on there two days ago, so maybe it's worth a watch).

I always find it amusing when someone resigns, particularly for something in the past. It does absolutely sod all most of the time, and they're not necessarily the ones to blame either :/ The big TV channels seem to be rife with scandal - ITV and Schofield the other day with Cameron was ridiculous, as was Cameron's reply.

Well I wouldn't call HIGNFY exactly left wing, but im talking more about it on the likes of this forum and in general - with the scandal concerning the Catholic Church, the left simply couldn't contain itself and used it all the time to bash Christianity over the head with.

So i'm just wondering why they haven't done the same with the BBC. (not hard to guess why of course)

I thought it was more a bash at Catholicism rather than Christianity, but meh.

Also I don't know if you've seen the episode but Farage gets bashed a lot less than usual, which is interesting.

Personally I think it's quite silly that Entwistle took the blame for it... But it seems that these things always wind up this way...
