Inconsistent on Gender Equality

David Cameron has said he is "very sad" that the Church of England rejected the introduction of women bishops.

But he said Parliament had to "respect the individual institutions and the way they work".

On Tuesday 324 members of the synod voted for women bishops - but its voting rules meant the 122 votes against were enough to block it.

It is truly shameful that whilst the government seems it fit to force profit making companies to not be "sexist" that the church is given a free pass so they they may freely discriminate as they choose. Cameron cannot preach "respect the individual institutions and the way they work" and then force gender, race, sexual orientation laws on companies. I'm all for equality but if you want to allow the opposite then you better damn well be consistent about it, there is nothing intrinsic about a church that makes them an exception.

It's quite interesting that the 'House of Laity' were against and the bishops were mostly for when in my experience, it's normally the laity - the normal people - branding the hierarchy's ideas as out-of-date. While I see no problem with women bishops and would actively advocate that equality, it's an attitude change that would be more effective than rules and regulations.

I don't agree with the Church of England on this one even if I think 'sexism' is rational in many cases ...... but they ought to be allowed, along with anybody else, to discriminate on anything they wish - because that's how a free society works and ought to work. All equality laws and discrimination laws ought to be abolished. I personally don't understand how the Church of England can be relatively lax about homosexuality (which is a sin) but then vote to retain this type of law. It boggles the mind.

No wonder the flight from the messed up Church of England to the Roman Catholic Church is taking place amongst Christians.
