Default Help! Computer freezing issue, +REP

I recently purchased a new computer from a local computer shop and I'm having a huge freezing issue which has occurred twice in a month. I'll be typing and suddenly the computer will freeze up and become unresponsive to any commands. The first time this happened I performed a BIOS reset and everything was good as new until today, when it happened again, and a BIOS reset didn't work.

    Specifications:
    Processor: AMD A8-3870 3.00GHz
    Motherboard: Asus F1A55-M LE
    Memory: 8GB RAM
    OS: Windows 7 64-bit
..when you turn off the system from it's frozen state and then turn it back on you're faced with an ASUS splash screen. I tried a BIOS reset today and the ASUS splash screen moved on to the Windows loading screen but this subsequently crashed. I turned it off and on again and was greeted with a message telling me that "Anti-surge has been activated.." and I then faced another crash. I replaced the power cable from a 250V (which I had been using for previous computers for a good six or seven years) with 280V power cable (which is quite old) and this appears to have worked. I can't help but feel it'll happen again soon despite it appearing to be alright at the moment.

    Suggestions?

Update: I've retrieved this summary of my system using HWiNFO64.

..my system crashed ten minutes after creating the thread. I was lucky a simple 'on/off' fixed the issue this time.

I haven't overclocked this system, do you still think I would benefit from lowering my clock speed? How do I go about doing this in a safe manner?

Update: Suffered a bluescreen and received the following: 0x000000050, 0xFFFFF8800BC81005, 0xFFFFF88009b7840C, FFFFF8800987840c at FFFFF88009B76000, ugh!

you sure? stock speed of 3870 is 3ghz, thats showing as 4.7

and 0x000000050 is related to dodgy ram, try taking some out - try to find the stick that's causing the problems

i bought this system pre-built, i haven't changed anything, i haven't played with the ram either.

the supported memory clock speeds are 1066;1333;1600;18, should i go for lowering the clock speed to one of these?

just ran windows memory diagnostics and no memory errors were detected, surely any issue with the ram would show up?

Dunno how good windows memory diagnostics is. I'd still try taking the sticks out one at a time

Your best bet would be contacting your respective hardware manufacturers directly, or even posting on some respected and notorious technology forums.

If all else fails, take it in to your local PC support shop.
