Would-be mugger 'drowned in canal after victims fought back and pushed him in'

    - Petty criminal Steven Cane, 25, died after being shoved into the water
    - Police believe he was trying to mug two men with a young accomplice
    - A boy, 17, was arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm
    - The mugging victims, aged 28 and 34, will be questioned by detectives

One of the two men he targeted also fell into the water but clambered out and has made a full recovery.

The two men who shoved the mugger into the water will be questioned by police about the incident - but officers are not planning to treat them as suspects as it is believed they were victims of crime.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out but it is thought Cane - who is said to have a 'catalogue' of previous convictions - died from drowning.

A 17-year-old boy - suspected of being the robber's accomplice - was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and attempted murder following the incident.
It's utter filth like this who make all of us feel unsafe along pathways. They pray on the young, on the old like the filthy scum that they are and they make people's lives an absolute misery who live in areas like this. I have a friend who was mugged along the canal (in a supposedly nice area too) by one of these human fleas and I haven't the slighest sympathy for that kind of pond life.

He lived like a sewer rat and he died like one. I'm glad the two would-be victims are alive and unharmed & good on them for fighting back. Judging by his previous convictions they've done their community a great service: which is more than can be said for our criminal 'justice' system.

    Thoughts?

I can't help but want more information. Was he a serial mugger? Obviously attempting to commit the crime is bad, but I have this gut feeling that he may have been desperate - he had no "life"... It seems a hollow celebration, to be honest :/

I think that the Daily Mail still can't write articles. In the article they say that the two men were victims of a mugging, yet the title says 'Would-be mugger', as if he hadn't committed the crime yet.

Glad that the two men won't be charged though, and hopefully the 17 year old gets what he deserves.

Article isn't specific enough. I'd imagine it's somehow possible, but it seems more likely he actually died from Water Intoxication (yes an actual thing) rather than asphyxiation (loss of oxygen) from drowning due to the time scale.
