can we talk a little about presentations
one of my tutors is obsessed with presentations and makes you do them in every subject she teaches
i have one tomorrow & it's 4 of us for 5 mins so i thought oh that's not bad
but none of them have turned up to last thursdays class or been in uni at all since, so we've not had a chance to make our presentation TOGETHER and they've all decided to send me their work to add into a presentation even tho i don't have PowerPoint and can't get into uni... it's to be in for 5 so im trying to do a ****** OpenOffice one despite the fact i have essays to do too which they've all skived uni to do so have had more time than me. i said imhaving trouble getting it done and they've just completely ignored me obviously hoping i sort it out
anyway, one is at work til 7, one is impossible to get hold of and the other just said she can't make it for the presentation

I AM ANNOYED AND FEEL LIKE BOYCOTTING IT
none of them are helping at all so it's going to be a mess tomorrow!

what do u think of presentations
do u usually sit there/stand with ur notes or can u speak easily without needing to
do u get nervous? people always tell me they're nervous then go up and don't seem it
what makes presentations better or worse for u eg going up first, doing it do a small class etc
should i just not go in and feel guilty even tho they aren't helping me out
    tell me your experiences

Argh, I hate presentations. Doing a maths degree I don't do many, I had to do a group one last year that was average, but I have one in the coming weeks. On Wednesday we have our practice presentations, and doing that will add 2% to our grade (Woo! So worth it!), and I've not even got around to doing my presentation yet (It's essentially a verbal 10 minute presentation for my dissertation, and I'm still writing the dissertation so can't really start the presentation yet).

Then in 2 weeks time, we have the proper presentation worth 40%. Urgh. It's on 'Using linear congruential generators for random number generation'

I always prefer not using notes, because I'll just end up reading it directly and not engaging with people, and usually I find it better to go first, so you spend less time worrying, and other people don't put you off if they're awesome. But I get so nervous, like, worse than exams. I hate public speaking.

And I had to do one for my Uni interview in the group stages, but that went horribly well, I had everyone nodding at me in agreement and got some feedback afterwards where they said they felt that I really knew what I was talking about. I didn't. So I guess you can act good, and it can pay off sometimes.

wow what complete ******** i'd just take out all their work and be sassy and just say to your tutor they did nothing 'cus essentially they haven't!!

what do u think of presentations
they're okay as long as you know what you're going to say. i've only done one that i can remember of nd it was a few months ago and it was on a topic on anythin i wanted so was easy peasy rly. i wrote out a script nd sorta learnt it so i knew what i wanted to say on the day
do u usually sit there/stand with ur notes or can u speak easily without needing to
i did it on a powerpoint nd cus i had had a script nd knew the script (didnt bother bringing it with me) i knew what i had to say for each slide. i am a rly big chatty person so i find it easy to talk
do u get nervous? people always tell me they're nervous then go up and don't seem it
yeh i was super nervous nd sweating all over the shop my hands were dripping!!
what makes presentations better or worse for u eg going up first, doing it do a small class etc
doing it in a small class deffo makes u feel so much more at ease
should i just not go in and feel guilty even tho they aren't helping me out
will u lose marks if u dont go?? u should show up nd make it obvious it's all your own work like

And I'd definitely email the tutor and explain the situation - I imagine you'll still have to do some sort of presentation though. I had a similar issue with my group presentation where they added slides from each individual person and I spent hours making it into one seemless thing, but it paid off in the end, and they actually attended group meetings and what not, so not as bad as your situation.

I don't mind presentations. Listening to them is okay assuming the speaker is a good one and actually doing them is again okay assuming the topic is one that interests me

I normally stand there with a couple of bullet points just in case, don't normally use them

The most nervous i've been was when I did a presentation during my last job interview for KPMG, was so nervous. Not so much because of the presentation though I don't think but more because I REALLY wanted the job (got it woo)

I like to go up in the middle ish, not first but not last. Find it a lot better doing it infront of a small group as you don't have to make eye contact non stop with one person but then there's not a huge amount of people infront of you to scare you to death

Should you go in? Dunno. It seems really unfair that its been dumped on you. I'd probably go in as I don't mind doing them but if its stressing you out and whatnot then I'd just not go, its hardly fair on you.

2% pmsl for a module last year 30% of their overall grade was a group presentation, thought it was dumb because u don't know who contributed the most :/
i do get really worried and nervous and idk why because the people are really supportive and everyone gets on well, ive just never liked presentations since my very first one in school and that was only with 3 other people watching. just don't like loads of eyes on me .

its not graded thankfully but they give feedback so it'd be nice to see. our PowerPoint can only be 2 slides so it's not got much info on it just little pictures and headings to help us but im not going to research their topics to put up bulletpoints for them. only got one persons notes and asked her to condense to headings for the presentation, no reply. 2 of them bring laptops in everyday so could have came to uni and did it today but nah rather drop it all on me cause im only one who even turns up to class

for me i can talk fine but once i **** up n lose where im going with it, that's when i get self conscious and realise people are watching lol. also last presentation she actually stopped me to ask me to speak louder -.-, as psychologists they aren't very understanding that many people find it extremely discomforting, she could have been a bit more tactful but in the end im not going to force myself to speak louder than i can. im even on the disability register for social anxiety but feel i have to do it because 'u need practice for job interviews'. i just don't find presentations an effective learning tool for myself personally cause im too busy worrying about my own to listen to others then once im done get too bored to listen to theirs. had enough experience n still find it uncomfortable, everyone has a weakness and this is mine ugh

havent even done the presentation yet espec as they've not given me anythin to write up, so im missing valuable essay typing time :/ might stay up all night doing essays n sleep in. have never intentionally missed something because don't want to let people down but they've done it to me so y not

@Matthew; yh gonna give him an email explaining situation just not gonna be too mean as one is a good friend and the other 2 are parents so guess they have some reason to miss class... Iv also put up the last 4 out of 7 forum answers that we r supposed to do AS A GROUP (which i fb them asking them to do but didnt so i do them..) so im sure the lecturer will realise it's not me not putting in work, n the fact they can check the register cause av not missed one class

The 2% is only for attending the practice presentation, the proper presentation is worth 40%, the written dissertation is 50%, 4% from the dissertation outline, 2% for asking someone a question in the practice presentation and another 2% for annotating another person's draft dissertation.

So at the moment I've got 4% of the module done

I also hate the fact that everyone in the group gets the same mark. In our group report (Written report and group presentation) we would get a base grade, and then we would get an adjustment to our grade based on how well everyone in the group ranked each other. Sad thing is, everyone agreed to give everyone equal marks, so everyone would just get the base mark, no matter how much work you did - so I ended up doing loads and two guys did barely anything :/

    i absolutely HATE presentations

first off jen that is such bs, nobody in my course would ever dream of not coming in to do a presentation if it was a group one, it's always a first priority. second, why can't one of them put the powerpoint together? or why don't you use prezi?

i'd consider myself a confident person and i have no problem speaking in front of large groups, i was even on my debate team at school but for some reason the past year i have just had a terrible time with presentations. like i'll go up and not feel that nervous but when i start my voice is SHAKING literally shaking, and when i finish everyone is like 'aww tara' and cuddles me because they think i'm really scared but i'm not even scared of giving presentations what i'm scared about now is my voice shaking!! i don't really prepare anything i'll just read from my slides and add bits myself but i try rush through them otherwise i wont be able to talk anymore

yeah i think biggest problem for me is the fact people will see you're nervous, it shows in my face, people are like im so nervous then go up n do fab :@

lucky u because in almost every presentation there will be someone who doesn't turn up lol for my last one 2 didnt turn up out of 5. i personally couldn't do that to someone and would feel so guilty even if i physically couldn't make it, ill most likely go in but what if i go and more than 1 doesn't turn up? i also msged to our fbook group that i was having probs getting PowerPoint up and does anyone else have access. the one who can't come has gone to drs apparently so is going to send me her headings/notes (she said that this morning) my friend is at work and the other hasn't replied so ive just installed OpenOffice and all i can put up is my own and the other girls. im not waiting till 9pm to get their info, add it in then send the PowerPoint in 4 hours late, ive reminded them twice since last week we need it done n can we meet up but they haven't been in uni since before thursday last week
