It was the year 2012 when Habbo was reported for sexual behavior among users and child grooming. Sulake was forced to shut down the entire Hotel for a whole month, marking the beginning of the decline of one of the most famous and iconic online games ever.
Sulake should have carried out a rebranding of Habbo to save its reputation, but instead it began a series of wrong choices that led users to quickly get tired of the game.
Between the tainted reputation, an increasingly absent staff, a blurred vision for the future, and an outdated game interface, Habbo is now out of the market. But who am I?
My name is Daniele, I am a long-time user of Habbo Italy and I have a passion for Interface Design (UI) and new User Experiences (UX). I have decided to put my skills and expertise to work to Redesign Habbo in an ambitious project.
I'LL EXPLAIN THE PROJECT TO YOU
I state that the main purpose of the project is to have a Redesign to add to my Portfolio. However, I am open to working with Sulake to introduce new features and modernize Habbo to make it more attractive to the current market.
In this Project, I'm going to take care of the User Experience and redesign the interface style to modernize Habbo. My UI is called SUNRISE (Alba) and fully conveys the message of the project: a new day for Habbo.
I'LL EXPLAIN TO YOU WHAT DOESN'T WORK IN HABBO'S UI
Currently Habbo's UI is a disaster. There are four different styles: the web version has a flat and anonymous style with dark colors and rigid shapes; the desktop version has two different styles depending on the version you want to download; finally, for some absurd reason, the mobile version has two different styles that change depending on how you use the device (horizontally or vertically). But why?
As if that were not enough, the desktop version still has remnants of previous interfaces.
You really have to put your hands in your hair!
I EXPLAIN WHAT DOESN'T WORK IN HABBO'S UX
User Experience (UX) is the crucial point of this project. Have you ever been bored creating rooms or have you at least once thought it would be cumbersome? Have you ever struggled to find a function, a screen or even just a button? What emotion does the current Interface arouse in you?
A good UX design guides the user towards a goal, simplifies the experience and makes it more fulfilling.
The worst UX in Habbo is definitely the creation and furnishing of the rooms. The Floor Plan is a screen in which modifying the room is cumbersome and boring. When you see the Architect Panel I designed, you will understand what I mean by well-made UX. Furnishing the room, on the other hand, involves first having to buy the Furni from the Catalog and then open the Inventory to put them in the room.
The annoyance begins to become more overwhelming when it comes to laying the flooring because it is also a Furni to be laid one by one, when it would be more convenient if it was part of the coloring of the floor. It's no coincidence that Habbo had to invent the magic stacker to help users furnish the rooms more easily.
A good UI is not only beautiful, but also and above all has a good UX design behind it. And that's what I tried to do in every aspect of SUNRISE UI, but it will be you players who will say if it is done well, because all this is designed for you. Feel free to evaluate and judge my project because it will serve: for me to understand how to work better and for you to understand what to ask and what not to ask for from Habbo.
