Proboards is very good if you want to customise your board. I like proboards, better than phpbb IMO.

VBulletin isn't free but its in a league of its own ermm best free one is phpbb

In relation to VB, InvisionFree is probably the easiest to get started, and to customize. However, if it gets popular, the optional fee to get rid of ads becomes more frequent, and I've heard reliability can go down.

Same with phpbb, reliability can go down when you have many active members, or so I've heard...

No.. it's not.
1.) No FTP
2.) It's just not that great of a forum.
