Dear Adam,
Yes, you are almost right! There is a chain conveyor at the top of the drop which engages with the car (the reverse of the lift conveyor, which propels the car forward, whereas the drop conveyor holds it back). This conveyor is motor driven, and when it senses that the car is hanging over the top, it stops and is held by a brake for a pre-determined time. When the control system is ready for the car to drop, a clutch disengages the chain drive, and the car drops forward.
