Hosting a games server (using webspace)

My friend told me that it is possible to host a games server
from a web host, he told me to look up the php function exec('');
but it didnt seem to work. and i was hoping if you guys could help me
get my server running, its a Linux operating system. someone told me about cron to do it but im clueless.

You would need shell access ( no hosts will allow) and srcds

.. I know a lot more about dedis then you and if you want your server to stay up and no one controling it, you need a dedi.... look at the webhosting deals on WH
