I think the whole anti-mainstream thing is pointless. Who cares if a band is on a rich record label or not? If I had a band I'd jump at the chance to join a high-quality label, that doesn't mean that the band gets any worse necessarily.

If I'm already popular, Id hire a manager to get me really short contracts on big record labels so I can have a lot of freedom. Might sound like a hassle though.

And he's right, its how the band themselves act where you can judge them. If they are on MTV or whatever, that isnt selling out. But if the band goes out of their way to get publicity which doesnt have to do with their music, thats selling out. It is impossible to keep everyone happy. Like how everyone says "their old stuff was better". If a band kept their same exact style throughout their career, everyone would get bored of them. But when a band changes, everyone says "their old style was better". So for musicians, you have to distinct between "selling out" and maturing.

I'll admit, I've never heard of most of these bands. But, I have heard of some.

Why fight mainstream? It's great to get that music out there. Look at MCR. Now they got some good play time on the radio they went straight to No#1 in the English charts. This is something that could'nt be acheived without getting their sound out there. It's opened them up to a completely new audience. And if you're gonna deny them being "Emo" or any other superficial label because of that, you are truly fikkle. You just want a band to be YOURS, not anyone elses. Face it, "DIY" bands are not gonna make a living off strumming on the guitar in their parent's garage. If you had an oppurtunity at a million pounds worth contract any band would surely jump at it.

Don't fight mainstream. Just roll with it.

What about Fugazi who did it and sold hundreds of thousands of records? Or the hundreds of other bands that have managed it whilst staying on independent labels? What about NOFX? One of the most icnonic and important bands around at the moment? What about...

you get the idea? that's not the point, the point is emo and screamo is in the mainstream nice and fine, but not in the form you believe it is.

just wondering how many people like it... before anyone attacks me, the following bands aren't emo - my chemical romance, taking back sunday, ffaf, fob, death cab for cutie, blink182 etc etc these bands are MTVmo as i call them...

the following bands are emo - rites of spring, reversal of man, saetia, indian summer, orchid, ampere, neil perry

How the HELL would anyone classify Blink 182 as emo? It never happens, blink are never called emo. They may be the best band ever, but they are never classified as emo, it's usually either; Punk, Pop Punk, Pop-Rock. So why on earth did you put that?

Selling out isn't particularly a bad thing.. if you're in a band and it's a full-time thing, that's your job. In a job you aim to make money, and yeah you may well want to entertain people, but you can do that even if you do have a lot of merchandise, or appear on TV shows and such.

Spuddee, I don't like having to dislike you because you're a Misfits/Balzac fan, but I guess you're proof that not everything about a band, let alone a genre, can be good.

From a fan's point of view it's a bad thing. Even though people think selling out happens more often than it actually does. There's a lot that goes into it, not just sounding mainstream.

most peoples definition of screamo makes me sick. tbh.
love to whoever started this thread like (L). i did used to label myself as a 'screamo' fan and in some respects, i still am.. but what people used to label as 'screamo' is now labelled 'post-hardcore' or 'hardcore' so i'm down with that.

Selling out is only bad if you completely change your sound to get a wider audience, there's nothing wrong with being popular as long as you didn't change yourself for it.

So I wanted to know if anyone had heard a pretty misleading genre, which makes me pretentious, so I sarcastically agree, which makes me even worse. God, hang me for my crimes!

we all knew there is more bad about the misfits these days than good... i met jerry only a few months ago, and they put on a sweet show, but the new music and whole pretending to be danzig thaang is so lame.

i'm seeing them! i'm particularily interested in seeing their support too. "help she can't swim" are an ace band :] i doubt they'll sell out, i was down the academy the other day & it seemed to still be like, available.
