If I'm already popular, Id hire a manager to get me really short contracts on big record labels so I can have a lot of freedom. Might sound like a hassle though.
And he's right, its how the band themselves act where you can judge them. If they are on MTV or whatever, that isnt selling out. But if the band goes out of their way to get publicity which doesnt have to do with their music, thats selling out. It is impossible to keep everyone happy. Like how everyone says "their old stuff was better". If a band kept their same exact style throughout their career, everyone would get bored of them. But when a band changes, everyone says "their old style was better". So for musicians, you have to distinct between "selling out" and maturing.
