It is still a tray as a tray is called a tray because that is what it was first made into, if i ripped up a towel, i would still call it a towel, not a peice of cotton material.

i crushed up metal tray, would be a lump of metal, possible vene to be made in to anotehr metal item, from a bervage can to part of a car.
A parashoot would just be fabric, the raw matrials used to make it.

I dont look at a tree and call it paper, it depends on teh state to what it is as the same matrials have multiple uses.

More on point a feathers dencity is far less than that of rocks. So one would be larger than the other in mass and surface arai.
