I think I get it. Like if you're trying to say a letter or whatever through the phone or something, you'd say a word which starts with that letter? Whatever. I usually use a country's name. D = Denmark, A = America etc.

But for example, when your in a plane talking to air traffic control and they cannot understand you - Although it may take longer, it's better to spell things out than them guessing what you say.
