as long as its not defacing them, or writing random crap its ok.

Like I wrote down all the formulae I might need for my physics exam on the back page.

    Apparently examiners like initiative.

Stupid, and they could reduce waste.

In writing THIS IS A BLANK PAGE it isn't. On all my mocks I went through writing sarcastic comments, but not in the proper ones. The margins annoy me too, I wrote in them loads (only like a letter) if I ran out of page
    Doubt everything, even this.

Rofl! 'This is the back of the exam paper - Oh I thought it was the front' That made me laugh. +rep

I remember my friend going on about this ages ago. Complaining that the blank pages were not actually blank at all.

My reply - MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T WASTE 4 A4 PIECES OF PAPER PER EXAM PAPER SAYING "THIS IS A BLANK PAGE"
You failed then, paper production and printing has very little to do with greenhouse gases.

    Not directly no. Indirectly, yes.

Paper goes in to the bin after use. Which gets driven to land fill sites. The more waste like that, the more energy used to transport it around. So more greenhouse gases released to get that energy. Ye, it only has a tiny affect, but global warming is caused by loads of tiny affects. There is nothing that single handedly causes it.
