Default Foot And Mouth strain indentified

    Foot-and-mouth strain identified

The strain of foot-and-mouth disease found at a Surrey farm has been identified, Defra has said.
The strain is one not normally found in animals and is linked to vaccines.
It is identical to the strain used at the Institute for Animal Health at Pirbright, three miles from the farm.
Defra could not say the laboratory was the source but it has increased the size of the protection and surveillance zones covering farms in the area.
An assessment of biosecurity at the Pirbright institute, where research into foot-and-mouth is conducted, had already been started.
The UK's chief vet and Prime Minister Gordon Brown have both said one of the possible sources of the outbreak was the Pirbright laboratory.
The BBC understands that on the same site as the lab is a private company which has suspended manufacture of the vaccine.
There have been further culls of other herds of cattle surrounding the farm as a precautionary measure.
Paul Temple, of the National Farmers' Union, said: "It will take several days before we know exactly what the situation is. Until we know definitively I remain open-minded."

In europe they dont do anything about Foot and Mouth. It posesses no harm to human beings, it will kill some cattle but the others with produce anti bodies and therefore become immune. Therefore its a real waste of life and resources.

I suppose it's like cancer really, the animals would die slowly and could have many effects on them, not to mention it could infect other countrys livestock aswell.

It's a very serious virus, very easily spreads.

They do actually, that's why the UK has imposed a ban on all movement on British meat products, if you were France or Germany, would you want all your cattle and livestock to be infected?

there was a massive foot & mouth crisis in the UK about 6-7 years ago. it's safe to say europe does do something about it.

Foot and Mouth killed Cumbria, it's the biggest worry for ever farmer. May be a joke to you but going to school every day one field across from a pyre full of burning cattle it about as funny as dead puppies. It also killed our car, getting disinfected ever day just made it rust just enough to kill the value. Everyone in Cumbria was somehow effected took 3 years to get back to normal.

"This is Ford country and on a quiet day you can hear the Vauxhalls rusting."
